Greenhalf Self Drive was opened in 1934 by Ernie
Greenhalf. It was one of the first daily hire companies in Southern England.
Ernie had previously served an apprenticeship at Hollingsworths as a coach
builder. The fleet originally comprised of Austin 7’s and Ford 8’s, which were
hired out to the public from premises in Devonshire Place and Havelock Road.
After the war, the whole business was consolidated at
premises in Caves Road, and finally in 1956 moved to it’s current premises at
Grand Parade.
In 1957 Ernie was joined in partnership by his son John,
Ernie continued to work regularly until he passed away in 1986.
In 1989 John was, in turn, joined in partnership by his
son Guy. They are ably assisted by Pat Coleman who has been the service manager
for the past 18 years.
Over the years the fleet has changed a bit, but the
commitment to personal service remains the same!
